Experience a new world in Childcare

Become an Au Pair

An Au pair is a young person from abroad employed by a ‘host family’ to care for their children. Au pairs provide a live-in form of childcare and provide a unique cultural and learning experience. When we think about what an Au pair offers a family, it is hard to simply label their role as ‘childcare’ or ‘kind of like a live-in nanny’ – because it is much more than a job. An Au pair joins the family to bond with the children and provide one-on-one care, love and stability.

The word ‘Au pair’ comes from the French word ‘on par’ or ‘equal to’ and with most Au pairs living with the host family for up to a year, it’s not surprising they become an integral and much loved family member.

Au Pair Duties and Responsibilities:

While your Au pair experience will have many wonderful adventures, it will be a full time work! You will be responsible for providing quality child care on a full-time basis and ensuring the children are always safe.

  • looking after the children and minding them
  • going out and playing with them
  • washing the children’s clothes and ironing them
  • preparing breakfast and light meals for them
  • accompanying them to the nursery/school or to specific activities
  • cleaning the kid’s room and keeping it tidy
  • Other specific duties as related to caring for the kids in your family

Your daily duties may differ from one family to the other according to the life style of the host family. Therefore, it is very important to talk about your exact duties prior to your placement. Have them describe to you what their daily and weekly routine looks like.

You might notice that Au pairs are not responsible for heavy housework, yard-work, pet care, laundry, or meals for the entire family. However, they are also members of the family, as such you may ask them to participate in general household responsibilities that are shared among family members.

The Dutch are active worldwide in providing creative and sustainable solutions for global challenges related to water, food, energy, health, environment, and security. It appears to be a perfect destination for Au Pairs for very different reasons; people do not only come to Holland to admire the tulips, the mills, the cheese, the cows, canals, museums, Dutch villages and the wooden shoes.
